Why does belonging matter?

When children feel they belong, learning becomes possible. When they don't, everything gets harder: inclusion, behaviour, wellbeing, engagement and outcomes.

Belonging doesn't come from a single initiative. It comes from getting five things right, deliberately and together. This session shows you what those five things are, and what they look like in a real school.

What we'll cover

Five areas of science that consistently underpin wellbeing and belonging, how it relates to building inclusive schools and what each one looks like in the classroom.

What you'll leave with

  • A clear framework for how belonging is built, rather than left to chance
  • Practical classroom examples you can try this term
  • Reflection questions to take back to your leadership team

Who it's for

Headteachers, deputy and assistant heads, SENCOs and inclusion leads, wellbeing and PSHE leads, and anyone responsible for behaviour or safeguarding in their school.

You don't need to be a myHappymind school to join.

myHappymind: Science-based NHS-backed wellbeing and inclusion programmes for schools

Belonging is where inclusion starts. A child who feels safe, understood and part of their class is ready to learn. myHappymind helps schools build that for every child.

Our foundation is our award-winning NHS-backed wellbeing programme which is inclusive by design, giving every child a shared language for emotions and regulation through one SEN-adapted lesson a week. myHappymind Belong deepens inclusion further, with practical tools for leaders, staff and families, mapped to the Department for Education's seven principles of inclusion.

Whole school & Inclusive
Every child learns together, with SEN-adapted lessons, versions for special schools and alternative provision, and myHappymind Belong to deepen inclusion across the whole school.

NHS-backed and independently evaluated
Rooted in neuroscience and positive psychology, and evaluated by the Centre for Mental Health across 269 schools. Local authority data shows the strongest improvements where need is greatest.

Easy

to implement
Fully prepared, resourced and ready to deliver programmes. Staff training in wellbeing and inclusion fits into hours, not days out of school, and helps the whole school build an inclusive environment together.
